Self-Limiting Beliefs Zen Practices Can Eliminate

  • FEAR OF FAILURE

The fear of business failure often manifests as catastrophic thinking, focusing on worst-case scenarios that create anxiety about the future.

It’s related to our subconscious fear of losing our identity through a professional collapse.

  • RUNNING OUT OF IDEAS

This stems from an attachment to having a permanent creative identity when, in reality, our creativity may shift over time.

Creativity isn’t a faculty we possess but rather something that flows through us.

  • INCOME INSECURITY

Often stemming from a more profound survival fear, scarcity-related anxiety can shake us to our core.

It can become a perpetual source of doubt and erode our self-confidence, ultimately affecting our performance and work quality.

How Zen Practices Can Help

FEAR OF FAILURE

When we practice present-moment awareness, also known as mindfulness, we remain fully present in the now, not worrying about the future or dwelling on past failures. Present-moment awareness and practicing non-attachment to preconceived outcomes combine to become a powerful antidote to the fear of failure.

RUNNING OUT OF IDEAS

Attachment to an identity that purports to never run out of fresh ideas places considerable pressure on us. However, we know from quantum studies that nothing in the universe is static or permanent; all matter and energy are in constant flux. Creativity, ideas, etc., are forms of energy we manufacture and reinterpret, and they, too, will always be in flux. Reminding ourselves of this eliminates the pressure.

INCOME SECURITY

We are again grappling with fear: the fear of survival, scarcity of resources, and a lack of confidence in our ability to generate what we need. Our culture conditions us to prioritize monetary security at all costs, but this behavior often results in inevitable disappointment and feelings of decreased self-worth. Instead, we can practice leaning into the uncertainty without reacting to it. We can identify it but without engaging in the emotional response we typically experience.
